Well it is Christmas time and Dixie decided she would keep up with the Hendryx tradition of opening gifts before it is time. When we were little we would sneak around and unwrap gifts then wrap them back. My father was the worst about wanting to open up the gifts early but Dixie has beat us all. Rene' came home from work the other day and found the tree undecorated and a few packages opened. I guess I will let her slide by seeing it is her first Christmas with us.

What a weekend!

Well this past weekend was Kevin, Mike and Gary's last longer brick workout and Sunday morning didn't start off well or end very well either.

Here is a summary of what happened:
1. Gary had to come to a quick stop and fell off his bike. Well it cracked his Cervelo frame. (12 miles into the ride)
2. Mike fell off his bike going up the sidewalk at the Yacht Club and his seat fell off. (24 miles into the ride)
3. Well I had two blow outs at the same time plus when we tried to put a new tube in the stem came out. (55 miles into the ride)
4. Mike almost fell off his bike going back up the sidewalk to the Yacht Club.

Thank goodness no one got hurt.

Very Busy Week

It has been awhile since I have written on my blog because I haven't had time. It has been another busy week but I got a few minutes so I thought I should write something. Below is my typical week:

Monday: Up @ 5:00 a.m to walk Dixie and possible go for a run. Then I have my Middle School Cross Country practice at 8:00 a.m until 8:50 then I start work from 8:50 to 4:15.

Tuesday: Up @ 4:50 a.m to walk Dixie then head to the pool for a little swim. Go to work @ 8:20 until 4:15. Then head out to the Lake Buena Vista running practice to help coach about 50 runners for the marathon season. Back at home by 8:00 p.m

Wednesday: Up @ 5:00 a.m to walk Dixie and try to run. Middle School Cross Country practice from 8:00 a.m until 8:50. Then I start work from 8:50 - 4:15. Head to Orlando for our Team Hendryx running program for 6:00 p.m practice until 7:00 p.m. Back at home by 8:00 p.m.

Thursday: Up @ 4:50 a.m to walk Dixie then head to the pool if I can stay awake long enough. Head to work at 8:20 until 4:15. Hopefully get a little workout in after work.

Friday: Up @ 5:00 a.m only because Dixie keeps waking me up to take her out. This is the day I try to sleep in but I do have my cross country practice @ 8:00 a.m until 8:50 a.m. Work from 8:50 until 4:15.

Saturday: Well this Saturday I have to be at our Team Hendryx running program at West Orange Trail @ 7:00 a.m to help our athletes with their long run. Then I will head back home to jump on my bike to try and meet up with Kevin, Gary and Mike on their 112 mile bike. I should be able to catch 50 miles or so of their ride.

Sunday: We have our Team Burnham practice @ 7:00 a.m to help them with their long run. Then head back to Clermont to try and get a workout in and catch up with our Ironman training athletes as they do a relay in the Florida Challenge after biking a 112 and running 6 on Saturday.

I guess I know why I have been tired lately but it is fun. I am coaching Middle School kids all the way up to adults training for either a 10k, 1/2 marathon, marathon and even an iron distance triathlon.

The next four weeks are going to be really hectic because I have Team Hendryx practice on Wednesday plus our cross country meets. Thank goodness that Rene' has offered to help out a little and Steve is stepping up to help cover a practice or so on Wednesday.

Until next time, Be safe!

1st swim back after 3 weeks off

Well I got my stitches out on Sunday. Thanks Dr. Mike for taking care of me. I haven't been able to swim for 3 weeks so today I decided to get up early, well actually Dixie got me up at 4:55 a.m so I went for a swim at the NTC. When I got there I realized that I wasn't fully prepared. I didn't have my swim bag with me but I did have my swim suit on and a pair of old goggles in my bag. While I was standing on the edge of the pool I realized that I had my swim suit on inside out. Oh, well my friend "Jim" told me to just jump in and no one would notice. I just thought it was kinda of funny that I didn't even realize it until I got to pool.

A couple of pictures from Boulder

Above is a picture of the mountains in Boulder but you can't see them because a storm was coming in. Actually it rained the first few days that we were here. I will add a new picture of what the mountains actually look like without the clouds.
I thought this was neat. I saw this the other morning as I was walking Dixie. Looks like someone was in need of help. I didn't think they were going to clear the trees but they did and the big balloon actually was able to help push the smaller one until they were clear of everything.

Good Week in Boulder

It has been a good week in Boulder. A little gloomy the first few days but the sun is out now and it is really nice. The temperature is perfect. I have done a few workouts with Kevin Konczak and we have been talking about a camp that we want to put on in May.

Dixie is doing well and getting adjusted with the other animals around.

I will post some pictures once I get a chance.

Oh, good job to the PAL kids today at their race in Howey-n-the-Hills.

Made it to Boulder

Well after driving two days and covering a little over 1800 miles we finally made it to Boulder, Colorado. Dixie did really well on the trip but was glad to get out of the vehicle so she can run around. Going to take it easy for a few days because we are a little tired from the drive.

Oh, we are staying at Rene's sisters house and her mom has a cat that has put the fear in Dixie. The cat has been stalking Dixie and now Dixie is scared of the cat. Too Funny.

Will post more later.

Brief Summary of Last Week

Summary of last weeks training.

Monday: PAL practice at Windy Hill Middle School. Running intervals and bike spin.

Tuesday: Lake Buena Vista Club practice. Thunder storm rolled in so we got rained out.

Wednesday: Team Hendryx running program over at Blue Jacket Park. We had our participants do timed intervals and everyone did a good job.

Thursday: No coaching practices so I was able to get some good training in on this day.

Friday: I ended up swimming in the lake with Kevin Johnson on for an hour. Then I rode with him while he was doing his bike intervals.

Saturday: Bill and I were at PAL practice. The PAL kids had a swim workout, then we had them run some with some hill work. After practice, I decided to go for my run but I noticed that my right foot was hurting pretty bad. I then realized that I had strain some tendons while at PAL practice. I won't go into the details of how I hurt the foot. Well I ended up running anyways and did a lap around the lake at 10:45 a.m and it was already hot. After showering and getting some food in my stomach I noticed that I couldn't walk on my right foot. Well when Rene' came home from taking her 3rd class of Kinesiotaping she used some of that magic tape on my foot and I was able to walk around. For more information on this tape check out Rene's blog @ http://www.renemayerfl.blogspot.com/

Sunday: Steve, Rene' and I went out for a 60 mile bike ride. After an hour into the ride we were all dripping wet from the heat and humidity. The last 1 mile we did get caught in a rain storm which cool things off for 5 minutes then the sun came out just in time for me to jump off the bike and run 5 miles.

Good Weekend

Good weekend for Team Hendryx athletes.

*Dan competed in his first duathlon and was 9th overall and 2nd in his age group.

*Three of the PAL kids competed in a kids tri and were top finishers overall.

Also this weekend several Team Hendryx athletes that are training for Ironman Florida went out for their first 80 mile bike ride. They decided to leave at 5 a.m because it was going to be a hot day. When I got up and met them at 6:00 a.m it was already 83 degrees. Now you can only imagine how hot it was going to get by 10:00. Everyone did well on their ride but because of the heat and the amount of fluid loss several were getting a little dehydrated.

On another note, Team Hendryx friend Kevin Konczak founder of Gemini Multisport finished 3rd place in his age group at Ironman Coeur d'Alene.

Don't forget to drink, drink and drink. Stay hydrated!!

Off for the Summer

Well it is nice to have summers off. We have lots to catch up, like doing a major cleaning in the house and repainting our porches. Also, I will try and actually get in a routine of doing some consistent training for a couple of months before I have to head back to work.

Team Hendryx is doing well. We have some really good groups this season and we look forward to seeing everyone reach their goals. Also, the PAL kids are doing really good. I have been waiting for some of the parents to send some pictures of the race that they competed in a week ago before I put of their results. Well I might go ahead and post the results and then I can apply pictures later.

It was a hot one yesterday. I woke up and headed out for my solo ride of 60 miles and when I finished I felt like I had just gotten out of the pool.

Until the next post, "Don't forget to drink plenty of fluids and be safe."

Good Weekend for Team Hendryx

This weekend we had several of our athletes racing in either a 12k road race or a marathon. All athletes had a great race. One of our athletes that ran in the Flying Pig Marathon. His name is Dr. Louis Allen and he PR'd by 15 minutes.

I want to send a big thank you to Elliot and his mother for their kindness for letting us swim in their lake and keeping an eye on us.

Also, our first running session of the year came to an end. So we decided to have our last group training at Harmoni Market in College Park to do a short run and have brunch. You can't go wrong with good food and good company. We look forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks when we start our second running session up. Until then be safe.

Monday Night Practice

Here is a picture of the PAL kids after they worked on Monday. They were awesome. I ended up having them do some conditioning and then they participated in an endless relay inside the gym.

Whats up with Team Hendryx

This week Team Hendryx will be helping out the PAL Kids on Monday night with their running and then on Saturday with more transition work.

Team Hendryx will have a group practice with the Lake Buena Vista runners and Team Hendryx running group. Both groups will be doing track workouts on separate nights.

Good Luck to the following:

Coach Bill heads off to do Duathlon Nationals

All athletes doing St. Anthony's

Test Drive

Well Rene' and I went to checked out a couple of new vehicles on Saturday. The first place we decided to go was the Subaru dealer. Well the sales person told us that we were going to experience the whole ride from a passengers view point. The first thing he did was get the car up to 60 miles an hour and slammed on the brakes right when he came up to a stop sign. I didn't think he was going to stop, but he did at the last moment. Then next test was to buried the front wheels in the sand and drove out easily. Then he took us up a steep hill and showed us the car wouldn't roll back. The last test consisted of driving the car up over the drainage so that it would be leaning over and he got out and sat on the door to show us that the car wouldn't lean over. Overall it was worth the experience just checking this ride out because of all the test they show.

The next stop was at the Honda dealer and it was uneventful. Just a test drive and then they tried to get us to buy a car that day. Well that wasn't going to happen. Just checking what is out there.

If you know anything about the following vehicles please let us know what you think about them.

Honda CRV
Subaru Forrester

Okay now I know why I swim at 5:30 a.m

So I am on spring break this week and Rene' asked me what time I was going to get up and I told her I was planning on swimming at 5:30 a.m. She thought I should sleep in and swim later. Well I woke up tired so I slept in and decided to hit the pool later in the morning. Low and behold it was set up for long course which is fine with me but a few members will always complain. There is always that one person that would like to have the lane to themselves even if it is long course (50 meters). So a friend that I used to train with was swimming and she asked me if I wanted to circle swim and I said sure. Basically she was saying it was okay to swim in her lane. The lane next to me had a person that complains all the time when someone jumps in her lane. Now this same person has a lap lane pool at her house so if she gets upset so much I don't know why she can't just swim in her own pool.

Well I ended up just swimming repeat 500's and getting about 2200 in for the day. I also bumped into several people that I haven't seen for sometime because I do swim at 5:30 a.m. One person even asked if I was still around in this area.

Oh yes, the person in the lane next to me was complaining to someone because she had someone in her lane that didn't know how to circle swim.

I swim at 5:30 a.m to avoid all the people that like to hog the lane to themselves and to avoid hearing people complain. Negative energy isn't good.

Saturday's Swim

A couple of pictures from Saturday's swim. A big thanks to Elliot and his mother for letting us swim from their place. Elliot was nice enough to kayak while we swam.

Some things are better off not knowing

Today, I went for my usual 5:30 a.m swim but it was 41 degrees outside. I decided that I should go ahead and get dressed for my swim in the locker room so when I stepped outside I could dive right into the pool. As I headed outside, I noticed a new guard on duty and no one else was in the pool. Plus there wasn't any steam coming off the pool. Hmmm, not a good sign. Well I dove in and then realized why there was no steam coming off the pool because it was cold. I ended up swimming longer sets so I didn't have to stop but it was cold as I was swimming and I never warmed up.

As I was swimming, I realized that it was better for me not knowing the water was cold because I wouldn't have swam if I had known this. Funny thing is when I was getting out the water the lady lifeguard had the guts to ask me if it was cold getting in... As if she didn't already know this. Also, when I went into the locker room one of my friends that usual swims when I do told me I was crazy for swimming.

Saturday's Group Training

Today we had a group practice at Blue Jacket Park over in Orlando. We decided that we would introduce our runners to a new workout and they seem to really like it. It is nice to mix things up and not just go out and run. Tomorrow we have several athlete's racing in an Olympic Distance Triathlon in Clermont.

A non-athletic observation

This morning I stopped off to get a bag of ice for our group training program and while I was in line a lady was buying two cartons of smokes. When the clerk rang up the smokes the bill came to $75.00. The lady buying the smokes just shook her head as if she didn't know they were going to cost that much. What she may have forgotten is that it is going to cost her a lot more money if she keeps that habit up.

Fun day coaching

Team Hendryx was out at Lake Louisa working the the Police Activities League of Lake County.

After introducing ourselves to the group we warmed up and stretched the group out. Then we did a little bike to run transition. Overall it was a fun day.

New Addition

Well we got a new dog and her name is Dixie. She won't ever take the place of Mabel but she is special in her own way.

I will post picks soon.
Monday was my first time back in the pool since August. I was thinking about joining the master swim program so I wouldn't have to think about what I am going to swim and when to swim.

Trying to decide what would be best:

1. Join master swimming and pay an extra $25 a month + my $37.50 a month.

2. Cancel my membership which is $37.50 a month and just joining masters for $40.00 a month.

3. Forget about joining master swim program and just do my own workouts.

There are pro's and con's for all three.

Not as planned

Eight weeks ago I decided that I needed a new challenge so I decided two train for a 50 mile trail run even though I had done any real trail running before. Well training went well and I was excited about the new challenge. I trained out at Wekiwa Springs on the weekends and was feeling really good about my training and nutrition. My goal going into the race was to learn as much as I could about ultra running to help me become a better ultra running coach. Well eight weeks to the day I found myself on the starting line of the Rocky Raccoon without my wing man Bill (out because of injury).

Race: 3 laps of 16+ miles.

Lap 1: I planned to check out the course so I would know what to expect for the next two. Goal was to keep the heart rate down and run about 2:15. So we were off and about ten runners were ahead of me. The course for me was technical compared to what I trained on. It had some hills but a nice course. Thirty minutes into the run I looked at my heart rate and it was much higher than I wanted it to but I was running like I did in training. The runners were friendly as we crossed paths (there were some out and back sections). As I was approaching the completion of my first lap I started thinking about how I would run the second lap and what goodies I needed from my special needs bag. Well as I recall I didn't need much because I didn't eat a whole lot on the first lap because I was feeling a little funny (headache and nausea) not a good sign.

Lap 2: I took off and thought it might be a tough lap mentally because it started to get hot and I got tired of carrying my hand held water bottle. All the aid stations were about 4 miles apart so I couldn't ditch my bottle. I tried to eat but I just couldn't take much in. I stopped at one of the aid stations and about got sick when I saw bologna sandwiches. I couldn't even force myself to eat M&M's which isn't a good sign either.. My body started cramping and I ended up walking the last 5 miles of lap two. Not a happy camper..

Lap 3: Never happened. I decided I didn't want to walk 16 miles and thought that it would be better to drop out than get injured.

What's next? Who knows? Any suggestion feel free to write in.

Mabel

Mabel was a fighter. Never showed pain but just wagged her tail. Recently her legs have been giving her trouble because of the cold air. Today was a said day. We found out that Mabel had broke her leg and we had to put her down. She will be missed.

Less than two weeks away for the Rocky Raccoon 50 miler

Well in less than two weeks I will be attempting my first and probably my last 50 mile race. I just received the official update about the Rocky Raccoon today. Looks like there is about 180 doing the 50 miler and over 200 doing the 100 miler.

I did my last long run on Saturday and was glad that I can start to get some rest. I decided to do this race in such a short period of time and had planned on racing with Bill.

Team Hendryx coached athletes race well

Five months ago we started coaching several groups for the Disney Marathon Weekend, well
this past weekend was the Disney 1/2 marathon, marathon and goofy challenge. All of Team Hendryx coached athletes raced well and we are proud of all of them. Some had PR's, some finished their first 1/2 or marathon which is a big accomplishment and a couple experienced a few problems (cramping and blisters) but they hung in there and finished.

Stay tuned for new Team Hendryx running, triathlon and duathlon programs starting in February.

Team Hendryx Athletes run well

This past weekend was the Disney 1/2 marathon, marathon and goofy challenge. All our Team Hendryx coached athletes did well. Some had big PR'S and some did their first race. Stay tune for more about the race.

It's Official

Well I just signed up for the Rocky Raccoon 50 miler which will take place February 7th, 2009 in Huntsville, Texas. I figured if I was going to coach some ultra runners, then I needed to see what they put there bodies through. Should be tough but fun and challenging.

Thank You

A big thanks to the following people: my wife Rene' for driving out to the end of my run and riding her bike back to help me out with fluids, Kevin Johnson for riding along with me through the bad section of the trail and for carrying fluids as well and Mike Russo for running along with me for the last 9 miles of my run.

Information about run:
Point to point
Not many bathrooms along the way
Not many water fountains along the way
Hilly
Ran through a section that I wouldn't want to run by myself
I am sure Mike Russo has a few things to say as well (he found a bullet on the ground)
Had to cross a train crossing and a train was coming

Oh, on our way home Rene' and I watched a older gentleman fall off his bike and I got out of the car to help him. He was scrapped up pretty good. You could tell the man was shakened up. We cleaned him up and applied bandages. I actually walked back towards the trail head with him to make sure that he got back to his friend safely.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL
